I'm looking into one of two major metro areas: Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin. I'm also looking into Bryan-College Station. The biggest draw for me to Texas is its friendly people; Texans are MUCH friendlier than Kentucky people, who I can't stand. I like proximity to good universities, a good job market, sports teams, recreational areas and activities, and nice weather. I really couldn't care less about shopping and the arts, but then again, I'm a guy. Which area(s) would be best for me, and why?

The three areas I mentioned are my top picks, but I'm open to almost anywhere in the state. Lubbock, San Antonio, Houston, Galveston, Corpus Christi, Amarillo, San Angelo, and Abilene are all nice areas, but I don't really have any reason to move there.

By the way, I do, in fact, live in Kentucky now, just outside Lexington.

I'll give you my opinion. I've lived in Texas all my life. I've also been to all the major cities several times and have an opinion on all of them. Here you..

Dallas. Great city. Good jobs. Good pay. Low cost of living. Lots of beautiful girls. Good sport venues and teams. Good nightlife scene. Very Hot. Typically has to water ration in summer. Has some dangerous areas you'll want to avoid. Six Flags, Wet n Wild waterpark. Deep Ellum. The West End. Texas State Fair.

Houston. Good city. This is an oil town. Close to the beach. Good pay. Cost of living is good. Good sport venues and teams. Decent nightlife. Very Hot, Very humid. Hurricanes possible. Little bit disorderly town with codes and ordinaces. Makes the city odd. I wouldn't live there unless I had too. Then in the suburbs.

San Antonio. Cultural city. Reasonable pay. Cost of living alittle higher than Dallas. Good sports teams but only one, Spurs. Good hill country atmosphere. Hot. Winter doesn't happen here very often. Good nightlife. Growing city, lots of construction. Sea World & Fiesta Texas. Beautiful Riverwalk.

Austin. College town. University of Texas. Cost of living is higher here. Higher than SA. Good nightlife. Lots of beautiful women and college girls. No major sports teams. Good hill country atmosphere. Great downtown with 6th street party atmosphere. Cnetrally located within driving distance to other major cities. great city. I'd live here.

Lubbock. Pass. College town and thats about it. Texas Tech University. You don't want to live here. I went to college here and its fine for that. It flat, windy, and cold in the winter. Try another city.

El Paso. I don't think so. You don't want to live here either.

Corpus Christi. Small coastal city. Probably too small. Mostly a travel destination.

Harlingen/South Padre. Spring Break destination. Small beach town on the Mexico border.

Waco. Small college town. Baylor University. Not much there.

Bryan/College Station. College town. Texas A&M. Thats about it. Good college town and small business.

Hope this helps alittle. Visit.

I lived in Dallas Ft. Worth for a number of years about 20 years ago. I grew to like it a lot. It was an adjustment since I'm from the north. Austin is supposed to be a pretty cool area also especially if you are into music because they have a strong music scene there.

Do NOT move to Houston unless you like 110% humidity and bugs!!

I've lived in Houston and Austin, so here are some details based on your criteria.

If you don't have time to read it all, here's my summary: Austin's a great town if you're a college student and/or in your 20s. If you're looking for a place where you'd stay long-term, move to Houston. When you plan a family, just move to the suburbs. You'll have the best of both worlds, plus you'll be able to afford it because the job market's better.

Austin
- Bad traffic (but not always as bad as Houston)
- Lots of construction
- Universities - Univ. of Texas (Hook 'em!) and 7 other universities and colleges (Note, this counts only those IN AUSTIN.)
- Economy (largest fields) - Government, Education (incl. higher ed), manufacturing, health care, professional & business services
- 2005 Unemployment Rate - 4.4% (Don't be fooled...it depends on what industry/career you're looking into. Many going to school in Austin will move to Dallas or Houston becauses the job market is better for their industry there.)
- Sports - all Univ. of Texas - Austin teams (Longhorns), Round Rock Express (Houston Astros Triple A team), Austin Ice Bats (CHL professional hockey), and the Austin Wranglers (Arena Football). This is mainly a college sports town.
- Recreational - Running, hiking, biking...you name it, they've got it. Highlights are the Motorola Marathon, 26 golf courses, Barton Springs, Green Belt hiking, the Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve, and McKinney Falls State Park.
- Weather - Average winter temps are 42 to 62 degrees and 75 to 95 in the summer.
- Dining - A little of everything, and plenty of places to get it. But if they tell you there's great Chinese food, beware. If you're thinking you'll find lots of nice authentic Chinese food, you're in for a surprise.

Houston
- Bad traffic
- Lots of construction
- Universities - Univ. of Houston, Rice, Univ. of St. Thomas, UT-Houston, Houston Baptist Univ., etc (over 40 in all)
- Economy (largest fields) - Energy-related, business services, technology, aerospace, medicine, and manufacturing
- 2005 Unemployment Rate - 6.0% (Don't be fooled...it depends on what industry/career you're looking into.)
- Sports - all Univ. of Houston (Cougars) and Rice (Owls) teams, Houston Rockets (MBA), Houston Comets (WMBA), Houston Texans (NFL), Houston Astros (MLB), Houston Aeros (AHL), and Houston Dynamo (MLS). Seriously, this is a sports town, both college and professional. Since many Longhorns and Aggies live here, you get to see a lot of those teams in the sports bars, etc., too.
- Recreational - Running, hiking, biking...you name it, they've got it. Highlights are Memorial and Hermann Parks (over 650 parks in all), 380 miles of hike-and-bike trails, dog and skate parks, indoor rock walls, great golfing (Houston's home to the Shell Houston Open), ice skating (kid you not)
- Weather - Avg year-round temp is 69.6 degrees. Summer highs hit 90+, but only averages about 18 days a year with a temp under 32.
- Dining - Plenty of everything to suit, whether you're wanting high class fare or cheap eats. Defined as a "world-class restaurant scene."

I lived in Houston for a year, and the summer humidity was the WORST! If you are used to humidity, then you may not mind. I never adapted and finally had to move....

San Antonio is cool; most people like it. Houston is a bit too crowded for my taste.
