Possibly. Although the barb pierced his heart he may have had a chance. The toxins usually are not fatal to humans. I think his big mistake was pulling it out. as they say. The bards have serrated edges and when he pulled it out. he probably caused a lot more damage than would have been done. Because the barbs point backwards and yanking it out also pulled a lot of flesh out with it.

Sounds like the answer is no. I heard on the radio that the barb was like a 12 inch serrated knife. An injury like that to the heart would probably be fatal no matter what. Plus the poison can't help.
I remember the doctor who treated him saying about John Lennon that if he had been surrounded by doctors, or on the operating table, when he was shot they still could not have done a thing for him - the injury was just too great. This sounds about the same.
Such a rare, million-to-one shot occurrence. Right to the heart! I guess you might say that fate was at work - his time was up.
VERY sad. I liked him, a lot.

How do you know he actually did remove it? The barbs have little branches on them to prevent the barb from travelling backwards. What I've always heard is that the barb cannot be pulled out. It's like the tip of an arrow. How do you know this isn't another urban legend and half truth that is circulating around?

Hard to tell...the poison works on the heart, & I don't know if the barb come off the ray.
He paniced & did the wrong thing, but it may not have changed the outcome.

The stingray's barb went through his chest and into his heart. Also, the barb was poisonous. The chances of him living? Very slim. Man, that's so sad though. I liked watching his shows. :( Gonna miss hearing him say, "Crikey!" :(

Probably not. The natural movement of the heart would have caused the barb to do more damage and the poison would have gotten him anyway.

Afraid not. According to the news report, on CNN I believe, the barb pierced his heart. Not only that, the barbs also carry a certain amount of toxin.

according to experts on CNN this morning...he MAY have lived had he not pulled the barb out. The barb did pierce his heart, but it was also what was "plugging" the hole in his heart. The poison would not have killed him...just would have hurt like hell. Unfortuneately, he was responsible for his own death due to carelessness. RIP Croc Man!!!

Stings alone from a ray are rarely deadly. He may have survived if he left the barb in him but based on the reports I have seen so far, he would have perished either way.

Very doubtful given that he was underwater & little emergency medical help was not on site to help. This is a rare & tragic accident & he is only the 3rd recorded person in Australia to be killed by such an animal.
