I had cut out a rusted area on my jeep, 2in x 2in square. I had cut out a piece of sheet metal to size fiting the hole nicely.
The problem: I don't know how to keep the 2in metal piece in place before tack welding with a MIG. The hole is located up above the Jeep logo without access to the back, where the cowl and side comes together. Any suggestions?

tack some small scrap pieces to the square piece in various pots be careful not to distort the metal with too much heat, but a tack shouldn't have hardly any heat at all, then apply a little pressure to the plate to line it up properly tack the piece in place and gently remove the scrap pieces.

Most welding supply shops sell welder's magnets that can be used to hold a piece of steel in place while tack welding it. They are relatively inexpensive, and come in handy for many projects.
