I'm sure most of the world has learned a lot from one of today's best heroes. I've learned a new appreciation for wild life, a new courage to stand up when people try to destroy our planet, and a new outlook on courage. If he had known he would have died yesterday, I don't believe he would have lived life any differently. He admitted to fears at times, that they helped him in his job to keep him alert, but they didn't control him. He didn't let worry keep him from taking risks. You only get to live once, yes, he died at middle age, but he died happy, with a full life, and a love for life, a love for his wife, children, and in preserving the planet he lived on and the animals he lived with. He didn't play it safe, and we all need to be willing to take more risks for happiness in our lives. I rarely saw him without a smile, and I truly believe his smile was from the heart. What did he teach you?

I guess I would have to disagree with some. He didn't die being selfish. He died, doing a project for the show that his daughter was to be host of. If she will still do so, I'm not sure, but he did it out of love for her, to help her dreams come true. And I think being a dad, it is a far better example to have your children watch you live a life of passion where you don't let other's make you settle, than if he went into quiet hiding behind a desk. Yes, it is very sad that his children don't have a father anymore, and that Terri has lost her best friend and husband, but I think she herself would agree she was glad he died doing what he loved to do. He never ignored his children, in fact it is said that he was one of the best dads there was, I think he led a great life of example for them, that they'll always hear about.

I have three avatars I switch from on a regular basis. This is one, and it was the one I was in the mood for. I'm a nature lover, love to be outdoors, and this avatar shows part of who I am. You can think it "sucks" as you say, but I don't actually care what people think about it or me. :) Now if it was profanity or improper exposure to the human body, then I would see why you would tell me to change it. But my avatar is fully clothed and enjoying the great outdoors.

I agree, his passion and enthusiasm for what he believed in and loved to do should be an example to all. He was a risk taker but he was an experienced one and he knew what he was doing, yes he died because of what he did in life, but isnt that what life is about?? I mean wouldnt you rather die doing something you loved to do and were passionate about? I know I would and while I am sad that such a greatly dedicated and passionate person died so suddenly, I am happy in a way that he died doing what he loved best and I am confident that he died with a smile on his facew doing what he loved to do.... what better ending in life can one ask for? To have done all you wanted to do and share your love of life and respect for nature with so many people is a true accomplishment indeed and I have nothing but sympathy for his family and those of us that respected his dedication to the earth and all of its creatures... I know I will miss him greatly, his enthusiasm was infectious and his programs were far superior to any other because of his passion that seemed to come right through the TV and grab hold of you.... there has never been another like him and I sincerely hope that his children will follow in his footsteps and share some of the passion for life that they must have inherited from him.

I am from Kuwait. A lot of people know him here. As a matter of fact my mom loves him, my nephews too.... Its not that big of news here, but a lot of people are aware of it. Not only I was shocked, but also pretty distressed to hear the tragic and sudden loss, but I was also thinking that Steve Irwin died doing something he likes pationately! Meaning, he was in the area to film a documentary about Ocean's Deadliest, and due to weather conditions, the filming was delayed! Instead of just waiting, he decided to film some segments in shallow water.... The man doesnt give up! He is colorful and full of energy :) If I was in Australia, I would go and pay a visit to Australia's Zoo (Irwin's Zoo) and pay respect to the AMAZING CROCODILE HUNTER! God rests his soul.

While I share most of your sentiments regarding Steve Irwin, I cannot absolve him from the fact that now his wife and children are without their husband and father. I'm sure they are more than covered for monetarily but is that enough. Admittedly, Steve was very cool and always gave 100%.
A hero? I'll give him credit for being passionate about his particular field but paying credence to my first remarks, not hero status.
None the less, he will be dearly missed. It's unfortunate for all of us that he will no longer be there with his quick smile and engaging personality.

It's really sad to hear the news of his passing. I had learned a lot about wildlife from around the world, and to respect even the smallest of creatures. He did have an nack for making people smile and it was so cool how he and his wife were both so devoted not only to one another, but to wildlife habitat. He will be missed.

I really cant believe he died! I was so sad, i liked to watch his shows! And he had a family! He took alot of risk and always carried alittle bit of fear inside! But for the people who watched his shows he didnt want to let them down! I would never go swimming with sting rays but i guess if you have been around crocadiles, stingrays dont seem so bad! But it was so unfortunate!
but i learned to do what i love but be careful!

Steve sort of 'humanized' animals without erasing awareness of their peril.
His untimely , fluke death doesn't take anything away from what will always be remembered about the man: his love for all creatures, big and small and his dedication to their preservation.

he taught me that he was a television entertainer. Nothing more, nothing less. He was far from being any type of hero. He was fun to watch and listen to on television, but he never taught me a life's lesson, taught me never to be stupid enough to go near an alligator, taught me to leave mother nature alone, and he taught me that I should never risk my life like he did especially when there is a wife and children who look to you for financial and emotional support.

Steve Irwin died doing what he wanted, but as soon as he got married and had children he needed to be a real hero and make sure he was there to see his kids grow up, play sports, have fun, go to school, get married, have their own kids, etc. He died doing what he wanted, being 100% selfish and only thinking about himself. He knew the dangers of wildlife, but didn't realize the dangers of leaving a family he was supporting, and children without a father.

He taught me in the end what the definition of selfish is.

He taught that a certain level of controlled insanity is a GOOD thing! :-)

Seriously... The FINAL lesson that he taught in death is that wild animals, even if they are docile are still wild animals and must be respected as such. Great care is necessary when treading in their areas.
