You're probably right about the baby cows suckling.
I think a better question though would be - what was the first person to cook and eat an egg thinking about?

A farmer discovered that if the baby calves were getting healthy nutrition from their mother that we could benefit from it too. And thus the dairy cow became a supplier of milk for humans (and kittens too). Most people at that time had cows on their farms and it was easy and cheap to have the milk for their family.

Think about it.... we are mammals so we know what comes out of mammary glands and how it is good to eat/drink, I am sure someone who was starving saw the baby cows drinking milk and thought, well it cant be much different that human mothers milk so I will try it, and they did! Also long before people knew how to milk domestic animals they knew wild mammals fed thier young with milk... it was not uncommon back in the day for women to breast feed orphaned animals like dogs etc so they knew what milk was and where it came from... and that any animal could drink milk for food.

In the forest, if the just-born calf of a cow dies, the cow will try to empty its udder by rubbing it against rocks. The milk deposited on the rock gets dried up in the hot sun. The stone age man relished such naturally dried milk. Being aware of its origin by his observation, he started milking the cow.

They either saw a calf drinking from their mother and had a bright idea or things were getting a little weird between the farmer and the cow, you choose...

This farmer must have had a lot of time on his hands. I wonder what his mates made of it when he told em what he'd discovered.

not a big leap to see there's not really much difference between a cow suckling an udder and a bay suckling on a t*t ..
