I have a 4 1/2 month old baby boy, he is big for his age and the doctor gave an okay to give him rice cereal at 3 monthes, i ususally did but only at night. Recently I have stopped breast feeding and is on only formula, I was adding the rice ceral to the bottles more often and now he will refuse to take a bottle unless it has the rice cereal in it. Iknow I cant give him rice cereal for every bottle. Any advice on how to wean him from the rice cereal and make him use to a plain bottle again?

It will not hurt him.I had to give it to my son now 14 mths in every bottle to thicken it up since he was 1 mth old.Try giving him less and less every time so he can get use to the taste.

Each week you should add less and less of the cereal. If you do it little by little he probably won't notice it. He is probably used to the thicker texture with the cereal, so you have to get him unuse to it. In addition, it is not safe to give baby cereal in a bottle, he could choke. So you should work on getting him off of the cereal in the bottle as soon as you can.

No! cereal in a bottle does not cause food poisoning unless the bottle is dirty or the food is old. After he drinks and is done you should always toss it out. That is when food poisoning comes in, because food poisoning is from bacteria. As long as the bottle is clean and the milk or food is fresh he is fine(besides the choking thing). So, ignore that other chick!

Correction it can hurt him. Putting cereal into bottles can cause food poisoning which can be fatal to babies. I totally agree with the others that you should feed it to him on a spoon then given him the bottle. I don't know why docs think it's okay to give babies anything other than formula before five months. Thier digestive tracts are not ready for it. Spoon feed it to him, you can make it runny with formula but DO NOT add it to a bottle!!!!

Put less and less cereal in each bottle, so that he'll become accustomed to the taste of the formula alone. If he's getting constipated on so much rice (which is common), give him just a bit of watered-down prune juice twice a day.

Sounds like he might be ready for the rice cereal outside the bottle. He must need more than just formula to fill his tummy. Ask the dr, but I think he should be able to start eating more solid foods by now.

I've been told by multiple doctors and moms that you never put the cereal in the bottles. It is a choking hazard. He's going to have to quit cold turkey. You can feed him rice cereal mixed with milk in a bowl and feed it to him with a spoon, but never in a bottle.

Make him a big bowl of cereal (mixed with a little formula) and feed it to him in the highchair or bouncy chair witha SPOON. Then give him a bottle of just formula when he is done to wash it down. He should take it from a spoon because he obviously already loves the taste. Just make sure he has a bib, it gets messy! :-)

Give him a lesser amount of rice ceral in his milk thusly weaning him. Also only give him rice ceral in milk before a nap and at bed time.
Ask your pediatrican, if you can incorporate other foods, such as mashed up foods and juices to his diet.
I breast fed my girls until they started to teeth, however I introduced food early and this allowed me to wean them easier as a result.
