The headlights are drawing too much current from the battery, possibly because of an alternator not charging or the battery clamps on the posts are loose (although the car would not start if the clamps on the posts were loose).
Check battery voltage before and after starting the vehicle.

the battery is for one purpose only, thats to start the engine. once the engine is running. the car is then running solely on the alternator, i would say your alternator is getting ready to go out on you.
