It is very annoying, HSBC used to let you draw out £5 notes which was great when you down to the last fiver and its the weekend so you cant go in the branch to draw cash out over the counter (that is true desperation, going in and asking for your as £2.50 out!!!). No banks ive found do it now. Why is banking culture now encouraging you to spend and get in debt, "here have a credit card" "Have an overdraft", "You must draw out at least a tenner so you know you will spend it" blah blah blah, Sorry am ranting now you started me off!! I try to keep a change jar now so that I can have some on me for such emergencies. x

I used to work for Barclays and it was just more economicial to only stock larger notes.

£5 notes were only generally available around or close to colleges/universities

Depending on who you bank with, you can go to the Post Office and withdraw less than a tenner if you like.
