The media plays an important function as the representative of the people. The right of the press granted by the first amendment allows for the gathering of information that can or does have a direct effect on the people.
For example sunshine laws that allows for meetings of governmental bodies to be open to the public. The press attends these meetings and reports on their business. The meetings could happen at any time or place. Secret, backroom, deal making gatherings of government officials can leave the people out of the decision making process....ie raising your taxes, building a road through your property, make it illegal to paint your house green.
Of course a lot of gov. officials don't like the media for just that reason. We slow the process down. We ask too many questions. We want to know if their wife, brother-in-law and uncle are qualified to run the state's public relations department.
So the short answer is: The media's roll of governmental watchdog and it's willingness to shine a spotlight on questionable practices is one of the strengths of our form of government. The media's reporting on the mundane like the proposed water rate hikes on the local level, to the national and international concerns like the domestic wire tapping and nuclear question with Iran will effect every part of population at some point in time. The choices that are being made now could effect you for the rest of your life.

If media is unbiased, it allows us to understand what is going on in the world around us and helps us formulate opinions and make decisions based upon that information; If it is biased (Fox news) then it is used as a propoganda tool by the government to brainwash the populace (911, Iraq, al Queda, etc).

watch the movie V for Vendetta. You'll find out how much the media lies and twist the truth.
Fox News is an obvious news network that consistently does this.

Media puts in to perspective what is going on in our daily lives. While it is important for us to develop our own decisions, what we hear and see helps us to get to conclusions of different events.
Media influences us on what to buy, eat, drink, dress and act.
Hope this helps.

It definitely affects the way people think and act. It accounts for Americans' failure to understand the rest of the world because their news is so one-side and biased.
