You ask where Chomsky is now. The answer is that he is Professor Emeritas at MIT.

I've taught at MIT and can tell you that it is not a bastion of liberalism. Chomsky is an obvious exception -- but MIT is filled with professors whose politics fall on the conservative side.

You do not understand the tenure system. It is in place to protect academic freedom. Tenured professors can be fired for cause. They just can't be fired for doing research in areas that those in power feel are unpopular.

I've studied at four universities and taught at three others. On the whole, I saw more conservatives on the faculties where I have taught than liberals. Granted, there is a better balance than in the media or the current administration, where there is an obvious conservative bent these days (the days of the liberal media bias are long gone thanks to Rupert Murdoch).

I agree. It seems to me that you may say what you like at a university, provided it is in agreement with the Liberal orthodoxy. You may be open minded, but only insofar as it is to believe all the crap those professors spout.
