It could be..what you should do is nurse the baby around the clock ---not time wise but literally...place the baby at the one o'clock position on your breast and have him/her nurse, then the two clock position, etc till baby has done all positions..this always got rid of breast infections for me (it is safe to nurse baby)

I was told to do this when in a LaLeche couples series I was involved in for years and It always worked for me.

Also use hot compresses and showers.

For help, contact your local LaLeche League (in the phone book) or contact someone at their website (or ask them to give you a contact person locally)

..if anyone has the information you need, it is LaLeche League as well as 24 hour support and help.

Consider attending their annual conferences, even if you must travel as they are phenomenal. You can bring your baby if you want. It is great fun and you learn so much.

Also all parents will benefit from this magazine and website and forum which uses an attachment parenting philosophy as practiced in LaLeche League. The editor and founder of mothering was a former LaLeche League leader. Here is the website..to get the forums hit discuss that is at the top of the home page.

You will enjoy it and learn so much. Although my kids are now grown, LaLeche League taught me to be a better person and parent and so nurturing. The best mothers I ever met were in LaLeche League. If all moms were involved in a good LaLeche group and breastfed on demand with child led weaning, the world would be a better place.

Good luck!

Could be cysts. Could be tumors, Could be plugged milk ducts. All of which need to be checked out by the doctor.
Plugged milk ducts get infected and that is really painful!! I had that happen when I was breast feeding my son, and my breast turned red and swelled up. Had to take antibiotics and watch it carefully.

It sounds like you are plugged up. Please go to your doctor because something doesn't have to hurt for something to be going wrong. If you can get a hold to an ELECTRIC BREAST PUMP, those work really good, you might begin to see the results you are looking for. And you can keep your milk for up to two days until it goes bad. (At least that's what I was told when I had my child 3 years ago) Keep up the good work, with the breast feeding, more moms need to follow by your example---you go girl!!

It could be. Try taking a very warm shower and doing a circle massage around the breast to loosen up the milk and see if it helps. If it begins to hurt or gets worse go see your doctor because it could become an infection and you would need to have that taken care of. Best of luck!

Try warm/hot compresses or shower, gentle breast massage and drink lots and lots and lots and lots of water. Then have baby nurse with his/her chin facing the biggest lump (might have to get creative). For most moms/babies ibuprofin is okay for pain. If you start to feel sick (like flu) with chills and breasts are more painful head to bed with a pitcher of water and the baby to nurse-nurse-nurse. I've also heard of a woman using a hot compress followed by gentle raking with a wide-toothed comb over the lumps.

Be careful if you see a doctor. Many of them give outright WRONG advice for breastfeeding.

Also -- you never have to stop feeding if it's mastitis/breast infection (other poster is wrong). Baby might not like your milk as much b/c it can be salty but it's perfectly safe.

Lumpy, swollen breasts are extremely common in some breastfeeding mothers. I would ask your doctor to check them out regardless (a quick ultrasound would put your mind at ease and better safe than sorry), but this happened to me personally, and it turned out that I simply developed some fibroid-type tumors, completely normal and completely harmless. It sounds scary and weird, but no worries, it is probably nothing. More than anything, I would advise you to be sure to seek medical advice and not rely on our answers...I would vote no on the blocked milk duct hypothesis: Unless you have noticed a disruption in your flow?

Yes they can be plugged. The best thing to do with this is get a lot of rest and feed your baby mostly w/ that breast (even if it hurts!) Mine took a day or two to clear up.

I use to get lumps that disappear when the baby eats and appear again when I have to much milk on my breast, but I thin, too, that best idea is to ask your doctor.

I don't mean to make it sound like you're naive, but are you sure you're not just engorged? Whenever it's been a few hours since I've nursed, my breasts have hard lumps. You can tell by feeling your breasts after you've nursed. If your breast is soft, it's just the milk.

Otherwise...it sounds like you should call your DR to make sure everything is okay.

How's the baby? Is the baby getting enough milk? Yes, there could be a plug in the duct, but I would go get them checked out by your doctor.
