I mean what is the definitive bench mark from being good at something and being a genius? Is there some sort of scale to measure it by?

As someone with an IQ of 146 I can assure you that doesn't make you a genius! Most of my friends don't think I've got the intelligence to be a potato. :)

I would have thought that a genius is someone who accomplishes something in the field of academics or art which public opinion or peers acclaim to be so far in advance of anything that anyone else can do at that time.

I believe there is an official definition of genius, such as scoring in the top 2% on a standardised intelligence test, (which also qualifies you to join mensa), but I believe it to be a more subjective thing than that. Officially I would be a genius, but I drink, smoke and swear a lot, and I'm crap at almost everything!

It's doubtful that on those standards that someone like Wayne Rooney, or Maradona would be a genius, but their "genius" can't be denied!

Having an IQ over 140.

Remember there is a fine line between genius and madness. It think it's about 142.

I just want to add that Genius has nothing to do with how you did at school or how well educated you are. It's to do with smarts...how smart you are.

Genius is not quantifiable.
A genius is someone who does something that is believed not to be possible. They don't just extend the boundaries - they create new ones.
Genius is a spark of inspiration achieved by a select few.

It all depends on who says they are a genius. Some mothers/fathers claim their children are gifted and call them a genius. Others earn to be called a genius for what they have created or learnt. It's swings and roundabouts
