Other than the essentials like a fridge/freezer, microwave, kettle and toaster I would say a nice sofa and a decent mattress. Then get a cheap bed frame from argos and dont waste your money on that part. If you dress the bed nicely noone will notice if your wardrobes are not expensive ones.

Buy some really decent sofas and then get cheap tables and chairs, noone will look at them becuase they will be too busy admiring your tables and chairs.

Or on the other hand went in this shop recently and the furniture is amasing all very unique pieces from India and Italy - www.tradingboundaries.com

1. Your Homeowner's Insurance to cover the natural disasters that can happen in your area
2. Essential Appliances -- Fridge, Washer, Dryer at a minimum
3. A Small, Initial Set of everyday Home tools for those little repairs you will need to make. Add other tools as you need them.
4. Outdoors Tools -- Rake, Shovel, Mower w/bagger, brush trimmer, and limb trimmer at a minimum -- other tools can be added later as you need them.
5. Something to sleep on (can be a bed -- sometimes folks sleep on a pad or floor until this is more affordable).
6. Phone Service -- for emergencies

New locks; you never know how many spare keys previous owners have made, or who they may have given them to.

After that, it depends on your priorities. If you're starting your household from scratch, I'd say dinnerware and some basic pots and pans so you can eat. Basic furniture like a bed, kitchen or dining table, and at least a couple of chairs (obviously couch and/or love seat would be better, but it depends on your finances as well)

If you meant what should you buy first I'd say towels and stuff. Because face it, you can sleep on the floor if you have to. You can eat fast food for a while. You can even take your clothes to a laundromat. You will however have a hard time finding someplace else to shower.
If however you meant the most important buy, I'd say bed because you will get tired of sleeping on the floor before you tire of anything else.

It depends on what you already have, but i'd go with new living room furniture if you can afford it. A lot of stores will accept payment plans now based on your credit. A living room is part of the heart of the home where people tend to congregate when you give parties. =)

Basic tools like a hammer and a screwdriver. You can't put together of things in the house without those first! Aside from that, a coffee maker. You'll need the caffeine to get through the other tasks.
