A prom dress is usually found in the Junior department in a Store. It usually is made of satin, with little or no beads. kinda "Girly".
A ball gown is found in the Misses Department and is usually completely covered in beads. ALWAYS floor lentgh. They can be sexy or modiste depending on your taste.
There is ALOT of difference between the two. Trust me, if you wear a prom dress to a Ball, you will be underdressed. If you wear a ball gown to the Prom, you will be over dressed.
Ask a sales associate, if you still need more answers, they can point you in the right direction. Just don't get suckered in for the most expensive one!

Now a days prom dresses can be just about anything. They make two pieces and so on. When you are picking out a ballgown you are generally looking for a one piece , floor lenght long classic dress. It should be fit at the waist and allow your arms to move freely. The skirt of a ballgown is usually big to where when your dancing it kind of flows. The best way to tell the difference is a prom dress a teen will wear and a ballgown is something your mom would wear. Hope this helps.

You received a lot of good answers because you asked an interesting question. Both dresses are formal eveningwear. Prom dress is a ballgown for a younger lady. It is, as the name suggests, worn to a prom. Prom dress can be any length, ballgow is always floor length or at least ancle length. As for puffiness - both can be equally puffy in the skirt, that depends on fasion. I think a ballgown is more formal than a prom dress, but the disctiction can be small.
If by chance you're looking to find out about ballgown for dance competition - that's a whole different story. Dance competition ballgown is made of stretchy fabric and it has a lot or rhinestones on it so that you can really shine and stand out on the dance floor. They are usually quite bright and eye-catching in color. One should not wear a dance ballgown to any other occasion than a dance competition or it will look very much out of place. Prom dress is OK to wear to beginner levels of dance competition, however, it might be not as comfortable to dance in.

A prom dress and a ballgown are both formal wear, but a prom dress can be any colour or style, and any length, while a ballgown tends to be a fitted top and a pouffier skirt which would be the length of the waist to ankles or below.

U r probably asking this cuz u bought or are buying a ballgown for the prom. well, there isnt a big difference. a ballgown is for a first class dance, and a prom dress is a casual (yet fancy at the same time) dress that u were at your school prom.
Did that Help? A little bit? Alot?
Good Luck! :)

A prom dress is whatever you want to wear for your prom. A ballgown is just the style of the dress. You know the big poofy dresses like a Cinderella style that is really poofy on the bottom and usually made out of tulle!

Well....
A prom dress it like for a party that's not too much like a wedding dress or poofy like the princess type.
A ballgown...
I guess it is poofy and it is like a wedding dress. It probably got that name because the ballgowns are normally made to wear at a ball. By the way it always touches the ground^.~

A prom dress is a type of formal wear that can be of two lengths. Often a prom dress is layered with netting over taffeta. A ball dress was usually a full length dress that was flowing and no layers of lace attached. The prom dress and the ball dress bodice can be strapless or have spaghetti straps. Now I don't think the old fashion meanings has any baring on what is worn.

A prom dress tends to be a little lighter and less stiff than a ballgown. Ballgowns are usually full Lent and lined whit either nett ore lace, while prom dresses are more sleek and usually not lined. Further more ther is not that much of a difference.
