A myth is more of a story that has been carried through time. An old wives tale, tends to be aimed more at medical / health questions. Such as : Eating chicken soup will make you feel better. I suppose it is splitting hairs to say that a myth and an old wives tale are very different in nature. I do know that "an old wives tale" .. .was used more often as an expression before 1950's.. today, most people would say that something is a "myth" .

Though they're sometimes used the same way, an old wive's tale is usually just a tradition handed down, such as the use of different plants to cure different diseases, or superstitions, like knocking on wood to prevent bad luck. Myths really are cultural, like Greek or Norse mythology, which explain the natural world by stories of gods.
