most likely it's a bad usb port, or the usb cable inside the computer has been pushed out.
If you have any hardware skills, you can open the computer case and check the connection to the port and to the motherboard. If the usb port is directly connected to the motherboard, then it's probably just a bad port. Not much you can do about that. Just use the other ports you have left.
In the future, I suggest using an extension cable. This way you won't wear out the port by repeatedly plugging things in and out of it.

Your difficulty could be that your USB ports are a million.0 or a million.a million, those are very gradual. you like a 2.0 USB port to attend to the print information. even with the reality that it worked in the previous each and every thing the chip controller for USB function will quickly overheat no count if it rather is being maxed out each and all of the time and wont artwork for top velocity information bypass. you could with the help of a PCI USB 2.0 card, approximately £20 to be certain this difficulty. Eamonn. playstation to verify in case you have USB 2.0, look in equipment residences, Hardware Tab, gadget supervisor, and verify the USB icon, if does not say 'time-honored Serial Bus Controllers' you have not got USB 2.0.

Try deleting the used devices under device manager (the ones useby the faulty usb port) . I have the same problem with my scanner and digital camera, they are not recognized by other ports, only by one in which they where first installed. Try also to plug some other devices into that faulty port such as a usb memory stick.

Hmm the cable connecter in ur usb might have been pushed out... or the Legacy Drivers need reinstalling... usb will always giv out power... like my usn speakers wen my computers off can be switched on. You need to uninstall then reinstall... do this at your own peril.. Theres a 50/50 chance it will work.... but what've u got to lose eh? Otherwise just put a whole fresh new Windows XP copy on to Probably make it work... if not its hardware malfunction.

To install USB 2.0 controller drivers
Before completing this procedure, determine if the USB 2.0 controller drivers you have on your computer are installed. To determine this, do the following:
Open Computer Management.
In the console tree, click Device Manager.
Where?
Computer Management
System Tools
Device Manager
On the View menu, click Devices by type.
In the details pane, click the plus sign to the left of Universal Serial Bus controllers.
If the word "Enhanced" is included in any of the listed controllers, your computer has USB 2.0 controller drivers installed.
If you cannot find the word "Enhanced" in any of the listed controllers, perform the following procedure:
Stop using any USB devices (such as a printer or Web cam) except the mouse and keyboard.
In the details pane, click the plus sign to the left of Other devices. Then, under Other devices right-click Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller, and then click Update Driver.
Follow the steps in the Hardware Update Wizard to complete the procedure. When you are finished, you might be prompted to restart your computer.
Notes
To open Computer Management, click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
If Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller is not listed under Other devices, you cannot install a USB 2.0 driver. To find out more about installing these drivers, contact the manufacturer of your computer.

Could be bad/ bent contacts inside the socket, you should be able to see if they look like the others, difficult to straighten though.
