traditionally, the dyes for these colours were rare and expensive, so only the rich and important could afford to use these colours.

Purple was once reserved ONLY for royalty, because it was so expensive. Originally, purple dye was made from a small sea-snail that lives in the Mediterranean and Aegean sea. Red was also a difficult color for dye, because most reds were more pinkish than a deep, true burgundy red. That's why these colors were reserved for royalty and, later, for the aristocracy, because they were the only ones who could afford them. It's just a tradition now, because anyone can dye stuff red or purple with a $2 packet of Rit dye.

Purple is the traditional color of the leader of a country, and red belongs to royalty. The emporer of Rome was referred to as "wearing the purple." The reason for this is that the materials used to dye clothing purple or red, especially purple, were very expensive, so those colors were reserved for royalty. The tradition has just continued from ancient times.

Well it seems like you have your answer, which is cost.
Colours through natural dyes originally used to colour material, came from a variety of sources. The ones need to to produce red and especially purple were rare and expensive, so that these were worn only by the rich, who tended to be either in power and/or royalty.

Purple and red dyes used to be very difficult, and therefore expensive, to produce. Purple actually used to be made from a species of snails. True.

It's because in the era of the ancient Romans, red was very expecive, this colour for clothes was produced only by Phoenicians and vas terribly expencive to import. so only kings and royalty could afford to buy clothes and accesories in red. now, red has remained a colour of the social status even though it's quite easy to make it.
