Confidence is a major part, enthusiasm, the right body they're looking for, the ability to conform to what they want you to be. You have to be open to their suggestions.

It will depend of what kind of model agency. some of them look for average, some others for etnicity, some for a curious face, some for a nice bod, some for atletic etc, etc. Now if you really want to work as a model the only thing you will need is charisma, smile, be friendly and do not over act. Remember that self confidence will take you to far places. No make sure you take a nice bath, shave what ever you need to shave, clean and polish nails, nose hairs, eye browns. Dress confortable, yet with fashion. Make eye contact and smile while you speak, that will give you a great lead over others. Good luck.

You really should watch America's Next Top Model. Even though it's with females, Tyra Banks does a good job of giving advice about being a successful model. You have to be unique, have an outgoing personality, be able to photograph well no matter what the situation calls for. You should not only know how to pose yourself, but you should also be able to take direction from the photographer. You must have self-confidence...if you don't think you're good enough, then no one else will.

I think agencies look for confidance and willingness more than all the other things. Your appearence is obviously very important but a good personality can put you way ahead of other models. It's better to work with a good natured model who comes 2nd in the looks catagory than working with a model who is drop dead gorgeous but has a bad attitude, believe me, I'm an amature photographer so I know. It's all about how big a risk you are for the agency (good looking model with a bad mood= not turning up for work= bad model= big risk)
Good luck

It really depends on the city that you are in. Different agencies for different type of work. Print, runway, fashion, film, commercials, etc. All have different qualities that are needed for the industry.
My daughter is signed with a local agency in Detroit. However, there isn't much for a teen girl in Detroit, because all the agencies here are geared for the Auto Show circuit, automotive ads, banking, etc. They told her that her "market" would be "print" and that she would have alot more work in Chicago for catalogs, etc. They asked her to get some pictures with a more "business woman" look for her comp card.
My daughter also got alot of experience working with different photographers in the area. Try signing onto a free website for models on www.onemodelplace.com, post a few pictures on there, and see what photographers want to work with you. That's what my daughter did all summer, worked on getting a portfolio together before she went to any agency.
Good luck!
P.S. The only thing that the agency should charge you for are comp cards, which is the model's resume with pictures! If you don't have a great comp card, the agency can't market you!

Height and Weight Proportion
Symmetry
Clear skin
Bright eyes
Straight teeth
Attractive (enough)
It is amazing how much of the "gorgeous" is added with makeup, lights, and camera. Many fashion models are quite plain in normal lighting without makeup.
Much of modeling work is print work, which can pay steady, but is not glamourous. It is basically catalogs, where you are a glorified "hanger" for the clothes. Your job is to not "compete" with the items on display.
Main thing - NO ATTITUDE. A prima donna attitude will get you shut out before you can blink. have a "can do" attitude.
"Yes I can show up at 6:00 am"
"No, I don't mind bringing 4 pairs of my own shoes"
"It's okay, I don't mind waiting 2 hours for makeup"
Now Smile!

I happened to live with one of the world's most famous male models (mostly worked 70's-early 90's) and he was 6ft 4in, aprox 165lbs, brown hair, striking facial features (kind of "chisled, European, classic looks-he was French), brown hair-depending on shoot- long, from long-ish curly brown to sophisticated short or anywhere in between); he was like a chameleon-from "sporty" to "elegant"; that was his "calling card"-the ability to crossover into more then one "genre"; The most important thing is having at least a minimum of 5 different shots doing/wearing various things; don't spend too much money at 1st, (have a friend take them, then blow them up and have all your info printed on back-make several copies of each: name, spec's(height, weight,waist/chest/shoe size) phone number should be included; make sure you're the only one in the photo. Just be confident (not arrogant), speak intelligently, and don't worry; if it's meant to be, it will, but don't give up for a while; give it a chance and learn to take rejection maturely; it's a learning experience; most reputable agencies will pay for additional photos for your portfolio out of their own pockets if they really want you ; oh, one thing he also said was "The camera picks up the eyes the most; if you're sad or angry when taking pictures(or hung over) it will show." The "powers that be" do look at the eyes.

You're close, might need to be a bit taller, they have a very narrow range for guys.
But you're close.
You need a head shoot or even a portfollio.
Send the head shots to all the agencies near you and in NYC.
Undestand YOU have to make your own way to auditions YOu may have to intially supply the head shots.
That's why I say go with someone near you. If you get some coverage you can try going to NYC and see what happens there, but without some coverage you won't get far.
YOu need to show the magazine shots, some commercially used shots.

we had a talent agency who casts models for fashion shows or tv guestings so i think i can answer your question well. you see, casters are not always looking on the looks/body like how other people thinks so.(so superficial!) Those are just plus points. Looking confident (not over confident), smart, and carrying yourself well inspite of the fact that a bunch of good looking and sexy people are around you will really make you stand out. sometimes, casters or producers end up choosing models who you might think is lesser than you, this is because they found something in that model who suites their needs.

Different angular faces supported by tall thin bodies with muscle tone in the case of a guy. I know it helps females to be around 5'9 or better but for a male I am not sure. You should check the stats of some males models online.
