Rather than the application of steam, try freezing the stamp and envelope. This may loosen the adhesive enough to allow you to remove the stamp. The colder the better.

take a damp sponge and apply it to the back of the envelope until it soaks through and you can peal the stamp off, or soak the whole thing in warm water for a moment and the stamp will come off. Dry by placing between a couple pieces of white paper and put a phone book over it to keep the edges from curling.

Don't get in a hurry to do that. some stamps have more value with the envelope attached. Check before removing.

It may be worth leaving it on the envelope, as sometimes the postmark is of equalimportance. I would trim around it for now, and seek expert advice. as far as removal the first answerer says it well.

Leave it on the envelope. Any attempt to remove it could damage it, and it might also be worth more if it is left on the envelope, especially if it has a postmark.

Soak in water until adhesive loosens completely,dry face down so any left over adhesive does not stick to anything.

boil some water put it over it to steam, gently tear off and put it on the opposite side to dry. It should be good to use again.
