The US is definitely a free society (thanks bFunk for the def).
I'm not sure why/how so many feel the need to imply that living in America is a burden.
In my personal experience, all of the Americans I have met, who complain about poverty and glass ceilings and nonexistent oppression; suffer from the following: inferior intelligence-which limits their ability to compete,
laziness-which makes it harder for them to benefit from living in a free society, no sense of personal responsibility-which causes them to blame others when they fail.

And the ones who bring up the President whenever they have nothing to contribute to a discussion, are the most stupider because they cannot think for themselves and only walk around repeating bits and peices of what they overheard.

A free society is a form of government which has at its foundation freedom. It possesses political freedoms and human rights. A "free society" is controlled and governed according to rules, principles, or laws (within limits). Openness and clarity are common constraints within which a system of jurisprudence is constructed upon, not choices added at the head of state convenience.

Laws within a free society are "free" when it is known that these are controllable and open to change. A free society also guarantees and makes certain its available sources of community wealth remain free.

Your question on whether the US is a "free society" leads only to political answers.

It means that you have freedoms to persue whatever you want to (within legal limits).

The government cannot tell you what religion to practice. (unless you are doing something like a human sacrifice, which falls under murder)

The people have a right to gather. (try getting a group of 10 people together in Tiannamen Square in China)

You have a right to live where you choose, so long as you can afford it.

You have a right to speak out against the government and you don't have to fear that the military will drag you out of your home in the middle of the night.

It doesn't mean that everything here is FREE. Sometimes you can get a free cup of coffee.....

I think we are a " free society" for the most part. But, parts of the law are restrictive to certain activities that should be left to personal preferences.

Aggiegirl and Butterbar Bob fantastically a lot suggested all of it, even with the reality that I do question Aggiegirl's remark about state authorities proscribing freedom of speech. i ought to imagine any regulation mutually with that ought to nicely be declared unconstitutional. Mr_White, examine the first change. It would not safeguard you from reactions for your loose speech, even with the reality that attack and battery guidelines do safeguard you from being punched. And it replaced into commonly used a lengthy time period in the past that a private resources proprietor has the right to get rid of you from their resources for any reason or restriction your habit even as on their resources.

The defining document is the US Constitution. A free society lets you do as you please, provided you're willing to bear the consequences.

The US is far from a free society now, having relinqueshed the bedrock of liberty for greater security. The fruits of this spirit will soon be harvested.

Relatively free. Not as much as it once was. I think the US ranks 4th on the Index of Economic Freedom.

what authority means by a free society is that you are free to follow the culturally excepted paths of thought.

in most us states, the age of sexual
consent is 16 (in iowa and s. carolina
it's 14) and thousands of previously
convicted and not-yet-convicted
child rapists are free.

so whatever "free" means to the easily-led
astray majority is erroneous, imo.
