It sounds as if you found a velvet ant. Curiously, it's not really an
ant but a wasp even though they look like really big ants. The female
velvet ant does not have wings and is covered with hairs. Male velvet
ants have wings and are also hairy.

Be careful with these insects because the female can produce a painful
sting.
