Sorry but no. The pitching just isn't there. Also the team cannot make it to the series only on Albert Pujols bat.

Of course they do, and anyone who thinks differently must not understand the nature of a short playoff series.
Over the course of 162 games, the Mets have of course been the best team in the National League. In a 4-of-7 series, however, being the best team doesn't really matter because of the small sample size with which you're dealing. It's the same reason why the Marlins beat the Yankees in the 2003 Series - the Yankees were the better team all year, but the Marlins got hot and rode a couple of hot starters to a championship. The same thing could happen to the Cards, Padres, or whoever.
And for all those talking like the Mets are already World Series champs - how confident can you be with two starters sporting ERAs over 5 (El Duque and Tracshel), an overachiever due to come back to earth any time (Maine) and a washout from the Pirates (Perez)? I'd be crossing my fingers that Pedro and Glavine are healthy and ready to throw a lot of innings.

I agree with Craig on this. Anything can happen in a short series, and there is no great team in the NL. The health of the pitching staff will go a long way - as always - to determining who gets to, and wins, the World Series. And, the Cards should get into the playoffs without a big fight --the division stinks, especially since Houston has never made a strong run.

The Cardinals have to improve their pitching and offensive sucess. But if the Reds continue their downfall from the NL Central and the Wild Card, the Cardinals might be able to clinch the division. But the answer to this might not be clear till at least mid-September. Even if they don't clinch the NL Central, they still have a chance to clinch the Wild Card. Actually, every team over .500 has a chance to chilnch the Wild Card.

The pitching has been a little better of late, and Pujols is as hot as ever at the plate. If Ekstein gets healthy in time, yes they have a chance. That said, it will be tough to get by the Mets, and the AL team in the World Series even tougher.

Everyone that makes the playoffs has a chance to win it all. Any team that gets hot could go all the way. (remember the Red Sox)

yes, but their pitching needs to come through as well as their bullpen. hopefully, they want lose Edmonds for the season!
all in all it still will be tough to beat the Mets so the likely hood of them going to the world series is not favorable. however, the mets have the same problem which is starting pitching especially if Pedro's toe is reinjured. the Mets closer Billy Wagner has been doing better than Isringhausen!
this is a great baseball season!

Yes, they may have the best shot because of all their playoff experience. But I'm thinking that the Reds might just get hot again, slip into the wild card, and make a run at it.

I think they have a good chance with the slide of the Reds as of late. But, like everyone here said - the pitching and hitting is erratic. And, I doubt they will last long when they get in.
