Yes - I think that is just a part of giving good customer service as long as conversation does not get in the way of the checkout operator from doing their job. The place where I do most of my grocery shopping, the cashiers at the very least say hello and ask if I found everything OK. After they bag and put my stuff back into the cart, they wish me a good day.

It always makes my day when the person at the checkout says hello and bye....especially when they mean it when they say it. It just shows how nice people can be when they try. Yet you can always bet that there are some who dont bother and just look as if they dont want to be there...
As for help with packing bags....this is one subject ive always laughed at....i always find that when i say i'll pack my own bags...they always scan the items much quicker as if it were a race so you can't pack in time. When you do ask for help...they either do it grudgingly...or in my experience they ignore you and you have to pack things yourself even though you asked for their help.
All in all....yes...that simple gesture could actually brighten up what could have been a very sucky day for that customer :)

Yes, but instead of saying goodbye, I'd suggest they say, "Thank you and have a nice day." Also, I would suggest that each checkout operator have a person there to bag the groceries. Cashiering is difficult being on your feet all day. A bagger will help and will also keep the lines moving faster which will keep the customers happy. The, "Have a nice day," will be the icing on the cake of a pleasant shopping visit to the store.

They should certainly say hello and goodbye and DEFINATELY NOT "Have A Nice Day".
Such an Americanism and always said automatically rather than meaning it.
They should ask if you would like your bags packed, sometimes its easier if you do it yourself.
Asdas till operators certainly always do the above. I can understand how operators can get bored doing this job and not have full flowing conversations with every customer! But simple manners should be expected.

the belief at aldi and lidl is which you're taking your messages and place them back interior the trolley , pay and pass to the cabinets they have close to the checkout section? and bag up there, this is purely a german equipment, additionally the verify out each and every person is on an advantage equipment, re the greater and the swifter they could technique checkouts, and what i dont like is , you stand in line there, and there is somebody else there, first fumbling their purchases into the luggage, than dealing with all wallet finding for the wallet, and than attempting first to pay the invoice with the small substitute, dropping each and every person's time . next time you stand on the checkout, look out for some thing, the until eventually finally computer is locked and the cashier places in a 4 digit code to "open" or "start up" the checkout, in the event that they exceed a undeniable time decrease the until eventually finally locks up lower back and that they could desire to put in the code lower back in the previous they could cope with the subsequent client.

There"s nothing that can replace common courtesy. If i went into a store where the attendants were pleasant and generally nice to customers i would not care if the price there was twice that of anywhere else,i would still shop there.Employees who can achieve this are worth a lot more than they are ever given credit for,and can make or break a business.

It kind of seems impersonal but sometimes i'm not in the mood for chit chat although if a checlout operator does make an effort then so do I.

Sure why not ? This will make you a better person and your line will always be full ! I rather go to a cashiers line where they say "Hallo" and smile at you and maybe bag the items for you .
