The Places the Characters visit in San-fransisco.. do they exist in San fransisco? or where they made up for the film... ie: the spanish mission, the book shop, churchyard and the red wood forest....but what a superb film it is! it's like a 'dream-like' thing...

They exist. There is a great book called "Footsteps in the Fog" by Jeff Kraft which is about all of the northern california locations Hitchock used in his movies including Vertigo. It has maps and side by side comparisons of what the places looked like then and now.

Yes these places all exist---my fave is Fort Point by SF Bay

hitchcock always as far as he was able filmed in real place not sets and he always had a cameo role in his own films
