1. The phone always rings when you are in the midst of something else and have to devote all your time to that.
2. The frequency of the phone ringing is directly proportional to how overloaded and burnt out you already are at a particular moment.
3. The likelihood that the call is a bad call (telemarketer, someone you don't want to deal with, etc) is directly proportional to how burnt out you already are.

I was actually referring to calls at one's place of work. So an unlisted number is not an option. Let's put this in perspective. It is supposed to be a humorous "Murphy's Law" type observation. Let's try not to take this too seriously...

Whoa I got one of those phones too! Two things have helped me on that, an answering machine and caller ID.

If you answer the phone and it's that long pause before the computer kicks in, press the pound key rapidly for several seconds. The computer will register it as a bad number and won't call you back.

If it's a live telemarketer, just say, 'hang on a minute' and set the phone down and walk away. Being on a national 'do not call' list doesn't work for sh!t.

Of course, the most satisfactory thing is, while it's ringing, place it in the microwave on 'high'. You may need a new microwave afterwards, and definitely a new phone. But damn it's fun listening to the sucker scream and die!

Just read your additional details. Do you have multiple lines at the job? Call your line from an unoccupied phone and put yourself on hold. I used to work at a credit union, at lunch time I was there alone answering three lines. I would use this method to tie up two of them so I could keep up with the single line.

If you want to cut down on the number of calls, get an unlisted number.
