Aahhhh, that's why the Germans call a vacuum cleaner "Staubsauger" = dust sucker, because that's the only thing they do right! I use 2 things in my house, first the good old manual push-pull thing with 2 brush rollers inside - that gets all the strings and long dog hair. Then I follow with the "Staubsauger".....

Try coming at it from a different angle. Or try cleaning out your vacuum. If its on a carpet then it makes sense as a carpet has a pile. Go against the grain of the pile.

how about when we vacuum over an area rug that has strings at the end and the vacuum sucks it up and you get this burning smell or break the belt ? (funny )

Do you? I just pick it up and hold it to the nozzle of the vacuum, vavoom gone!
Maybe its cos we want the machine to do the job the sales people told us it would?
