I have an 11 year old son who has ADHD, He has been on adderral for a couple of years now, during the summer he came to me and said he didnt like his medicine because of the way it makes him feel, so of course with the doctors permission we took him off it. He did great during the summer; however, when school started thats a whole new ball game, Ive sent him to school without the mediciation and basicaly he is failing because he can not focus, he is very forgetful, he isint bringing home home work or completeing class work, his teacher told me if I was a good mommy Id put my son back on his medicine to avoid these problems, she said my son is a mess. If his school work and grades are being affected should I have him put back on the medicine or are ther possibly other altenatives? Plus what do you all think about the teachers comment. Im very confused and dont know what the right thing is to do. All advice is welcomed

There are other options out there other than medication, you just have to be willing to use them. Below is a link to a site that will give you info on diet as well as other behavior mods that can be helpful. We use behavior mods at home and they have some success. Also, I believe that diet makes a difference as well.

As far as what the teacher said - I would maybe make a call to the principal and let her know what was said. I don't think that is the most appropriate thing to say to a parent. Maybe she is just frustrated but then she needs to learn to be more diplomatic.

Check out the site. You may find some helpful info there regarding how to talk to and deal with the school as well.

id talk to someone on the school board about that little comment it was completely unacceptable. how dare she? any way i think taking him off drugs was the best thing you can do for him. just because his mind and body are busy trying to develop you dont want to slow him down. you should ask around and see if you can find a school that caters to children who need a little more free time. not special education like we had when we were young but a school that is sensitive to him. he deserves it. and i would bet he will qualify for grants or maybe even scholorships to pay for it if its a private school. your his mama you know what really best in your heart and if you thought the drugs were best you would have keapt him on them. good luck. and find that teacher in a dark alley!... .... .... just kidding.

ok I watch a show on ADHD.. remove all pop from the home - especially those with caffine
less TV, TV has been proven to "train the brain" to have short attention spans since it jumps around and interupts with commercials
more outdoor time with nature... poking around in ponds, throwing rocks into the river... they proved that kids who spent time with nature didnt have as many problems

for school - perhaps a lower dose or perhaps consider homeschooling instead

you may have to give him his medicine. The medicine is like a get high pill and when the medicine is stopped and completely out of the child's system he or she goes through with draws.

I'd say give him his medicine, and keep him on it. Then start looking for alternatives.
