Could anyone give me a link to a website that shows various AMD equivalents to the Intel proessors?

Just to correct C-Man. M2 isn't a new line of AMD Dual core processors. It's just a new socket. The Athlon X2 processors are available in both socket 939 and socket M2. Same processors, same speed, different socket. Socket M2 just uses DDR2 RAM which is no faster than regular DDR RAM and costs more.

Back to the topic. If you want a dual core processor the intel core 2 duo are currently the fastest ones out there. The pentium Ds aren't much worth using. They also have problems overheating. If you can't afford or don't want the Core 2 Duo then you should check out the AMD Athlon X2 series. They've been dropping prices like mad. The X2 3800 is about $145 now.

The basic rule of thumb for AMD processors is that you look at the number whch precedes the plus sign to get an idea of what clock speed for an Intel processor it's roughly equivalent to.

So for example, an Athlon X2 3200+ will be equivalent to a 3.2Ghz Pentium 4, a 3800+ matches a 3.8ghz Intel processor.

The Pentium-D isn't a great performer. If you want a dual-core system, either go with Intel's new Core 2 Duo processors, or something from AMD's X2 (or newer M2) line.

If you're not running multiple applications and just want fast performance for gaming, a single core 3.2Ghz Pentium 4 HT will outperform a dual-core 2.8Ghz Pentium D. For games, the higher clockspeed is more important than the extra core.

Here's an article covering the recent release of Intel's Core 2 Duo (also known as Conroe) chips:
