The tail of a stingray punctured his chest and killed him in a tragic accident.

He was filming an underwater documentary at the Great Barrier Reef. He floated above a stingray, which are usually very docile and it stung him in the heart with it's poisonous barb. It was caught on the film and shows Steve pulling the barb out and then it was over. There have only been 3-17 deaths worldwide from stingrays, so this was very uncommon. They don't attack unless provoked but the film does not show Steve confronting it or being aggressive with it in any way.They figure maybe the stingray felt trapped between Steve above him and the camera man below him.

He was swimming in the reef and swam over top of a sting ray that he did not see. When he did this the sting ray got startled and when they get startled they shoot their barbs straight up in the air. When this happened Steve was too close and the barb punctured his heart basically killing him on contact.

He was shooting his series "Ocean's deadliest" but he swam too close to a sting ray (which thought he was a predator) ...the sting ray took its tale and pierced it thru his chest and put a hole into his heart and he died.

he was swimming on the great barrier reef filming a documentary and was peirced directly in the heart by a sting ray. they said it was actually a freak thing given his knowledge and experience. sting rays are not ususally deadly

A sting ray stabbed him. It went under his ribs and stabbed his hart. It is soo sad.
