Much of jumping is genetic. If you are athletic, you should be able to improve your jumping skills. If you are not coordinated and not in shape already, it will be difficult.

The first step is to measure your current vertical leap, both with a running start and with a one step start. Many schools and basketball teams have a device to measure this accurately. If you don't have access to this type of device, put some chalk on your fingertips, stand against a wall and touch as high as you can - that's your standing reach. Then jump as high as you can from one step. Do this three times and take the average. The difference between the standing reach and the one-step jump is your vertical leap. Measure this every week or so, and keep a record.

Very few people have ever increased their vertical by more than a few inches. The most success comes from plyometric exercises that stretch all your jumping and landing muscles. This involves some expensive equipment and should be supervised by a knowledgeable coach. These exercises are commonly used by volleyball players to increase their vertical.

You can get a book on plyometrics and build the equipment yourself, but I would strongly recommend having a professional trainer to show you the ropes.

If you're looking for something on your own, try skipping rope for 5-10 minutes every day. You should see some improvement in a couple of weeks if you keep at it.

The other thing is to jump as much as possible. You can improve your running jump considerably just by getting more coordinated. If you have a beach nearby, jumping in the sand is supposed to help considerably.

As far as the products sold on the Internet to improve your vertical, I don't know of any NBA players that have improved their vertical through using them, so be careful with your money.

You need to strengthen your HAMSTRING muscles, and maybe a little bit of your calves...

You hamstring is responsible for the explosive burst that makes you jump when it contracts! so excercising and strengthening this muscle will allow you for more explosive contractions, therefore higher jumps
