I saw a tv programme the other week"i think it was either countryfile or gardeners world" and i believe they are dying because of some disease, if i remember correctly it was caused or spread by a caterpillar.

Its not that the tree is dying...it is losing leaves as it is almost autumn. The drier the soil, the earlier the leaves fall. This year has been a hot dry summer, so trees will lose their leaves earlier than usual.

they are alive and well in Glasgow and throwing conkers at us as we walk under them. perhaps it is lack of rain where you are.
i have noticed several other dead trees this year though

the season are all messed up with the ozone it is autum allready if you noticed all the leaves are falling and we have not left summer yet.

hard to imagine chestnut trees dying as you say they are --- perhaps someone poisoned them --- are you absolutely sure they are dying ???
