I have some old wood bedroom pieces from the 1920's that look really good, but there are some scratches and water stains on them. Are such issues easy for a regular person to fix or must I take them to a professional? Thanks!

Try refinishing yourself..................it is time consuming but worth every minute of satisfaction you get....a friend of mine and I refinished a couple of tables. We sanded in between 8 coats of finish..............what beauties the tables turned out to be. have fun and good luck...Let is take you several months in your spare time....

i have done this a many times when i refinished antiques. take a needle and jabs holes into the scratch and take a wet rag and a hot iron take the wet rag and put it over the scratch and what youre doing is ironing out the scratches. the moisture and the heat causes the wood to swell and then take a very fine piece of sand paper and sand it out.

There is scratch cover that will help with both issues - it's available in the cleaning products area in a grocery store. I wouldn't take it to a professional - they charge a fortune - I had one small coffeetable refinished and it cost over $200.

I use Howard (restor-a-finish) Simple process just wipe on -wipe off.Comes in about 9 different colors.Great stuff for scratches and water marks or just plain faded out furniture.I like to use the walnut color it works good on either walnut or mahogany pieces. It can be purchased @ hardware stores or Lowes. Checkout their site it will explain what this product will do. It really works for me.

the water marks you can refinish it or i swear this works... cigar ash and spit rub in circular motion and it will eliminate the water stains... the scratch depends on how deep they are but a wood putty would be best for this age... but remember you take away the value when you clean or repair any antiques...
