This goes back into the mists of time when each country developed their own money based on gold. They developed their own names for their currency and if one country was richer than another, then their money became more valuable than the poorer country. We still see this today. Look at the exchange rate between say the UK and Malawi. The last big attempt to have a uniform currency across a large number of countries was the introduction of the Euro.

Why should it be the same in every country? It would mean people giving up some of their national identity... and a lot of people are definitely not ready to give that up.
And how much a nation's currency is worth depends on the (now) economic stability of that country (GDP, etc.). It used to be the amount of gold the country owns, AFAIK.
Anyway, the Euro is a good step in the direction of unifying currencies, and it does seem to be working. Not that quite everyone has accepted it... :)

Believe you me, ever since we went into the Euro (I live in Greece) every thing has gone up and up and up. Money has not got any value anymore. You are lucky to have kept the pound. not only is it more economical, but it gives the country individuality. Greece lost the drachma which was the old currency still used in the world. It was a sad sad day.
