I posed this question last week and many of the answers were because it's the next "natural step" in a commited relationship..but not one person could say why....if marriage is so natural why did it have to be invented?

(please no answers that god or jesus wants it...)

For a lifelong companion. Some people just aren't meant to have kids and are better off that way.

All the above answers are wrong.
Look at it logically.
1. Animals don't marry. Neither did cavemen.
2. When civilization grew, social rules were formed.
3. A man could go to his home to find his wife still there, cooking his food and looking after his kids. Division of labour: I do things I do best; you do what you do best. My money is your money.
4. This was convenient and became stronger through the ages, and money, and family ties became more important. This ensured family property was properly inherited. And a child born out of marriage was looked down upon, for no fault of that child.

Therefore, marriage is not natural. Society dictates that tie for society's good.
My personal view is that if people are not ready to commit themselves to each other for good, better not marry. If you are committed to one person, why not marry that person? The matrimonial bond is a bit stronger than a 'living together' one and will keep you together longer.

I know a couple like that and I'm baffled. To me a marriage means children But they just wanted to commit to each other. It's not exactly religious but they do come from traditional families and they do sort of have the idea that couples shoudl be married. I'm not sure about when marriage was invented.

Marriage is a public proclamation to the world and government that two parties are one institution.

Besides being the greatest act of commitment and love you could show your spouse, it also entitles you and your spouse to legal privileges that only married couples can have and makes it socially acceptable in more conservative neighborhoods for you two to stay together.

Of course, when Maxine Grey from Judging Amy was asked that question, this was her reply: "To be able to officially have sex, Shawn. Why else?"

Marriage started out for economic and political benefit. Why get married if not having kids? Maybe there are some economic benefits (health care coverage? tax benefits of filing married vs single?). Hey if nothing else, if you are truly committed to the other person, if you are married and you get sick, there aren't questions on whether they can be with you in the hospital and make health care decisions for you. And if you die, there are fewer (or no) questions about them inheriting your estate!

Well wouldn't the reason be obvious? Becasue you LOVE each other.... some people really dont want kids but you should've asked your spouse before the nuptials if they wanted kids... some people cant have kids and they still get married.... I know people who dont want kids at all and they are happily married... Why does everyone have to have kids if they get married? If that was the case the world would be way overpopulated!
Marriage is the union of two people sworn to each other... they are exclusive to each other.. i dont remember in my vows anything saying and i will have babies with so and so...

marriage was invented by the religious to help the insecure feel secure and to make money for lawyers, wedding planners, florists, ect. a committed relationship does not need the approval of any one. the only reason for it is so that the offspring can have the legal name of the father.

Just because you don't want kids, does not mean you can't get married... Marriage is between two people who truly love and care for each other and want to spend the rest of their lives together. Two people who want to be committed with one another and no one else.....

People just need to figure out what exactly they want with their partner and lay it all out on the table.. If children is one of them, then it is obvious that you need to find someone who is on the same page as you.....

The reason you get married is to have that certain someone in your life that you can annoy the heck out of for the rest of their lives. It is proven married people live longer. That is because the surviving spouse wants to be the one to get the last word in.(finally)
