It is the same concept as the tale of a scorpion. Howvever on a stingray the tail goes out and the barb is on the top of the tail. When they are not swimming they hide on the ocean floor , flutter there wing tips and cover themselves in sand. If you step on one they will flip their tail up and hit you. The barb doesnt always come off. It can just pierce you.It is hard like cartlidge and contains venom. They usually dont kill you, but can be very painful.

Funny you should ask, because I looked up exactly what a stingray does for the same reason just yesterday. The stingray's tail has sharp barbed pieces (kind of like a medieval weapon) made of fingernail-type substance, that can cut into enemies, although it usuall doesn't use this defense, preferring to swim away instead. And incidentally, the barbed end is coated with toxins to make it even less appealing :) This, I believe, is what killed the Crocodile Hunter, when it got in his heart, and consequently through his whole system.

The wikipedia article for stingray, actually has Steve Irwin's death in the description already.
