In western society, time is money. But you can also choose to not 'sell' so much of your time to the workplace, and keep more of your time free for other purposes. Of course, your income will be lower, and may not allow for luxuries and a consumer lifestyle.
Voluntary simplicity is one way to live in western culture and still have more free time: distinguish 'needs' from 'wants'. Only purchase what you truly need. You can live on less, that way. You will have fewer possessions, and be wealthy in terms of your free time.

Time is not exactly free but I wouldn't put a monetary value on it so I lean toward Eastern thought. Time is what our life here on Earth is made up of so use it wisely.

"Eastern value, time is free" -- I'm not so sure about that.
"Western value, time is money" -- Definitely or at least, everything is work, work, work.
