I get anywhere from 6-8 hours a night, I think thats the ideal amount!

Seven to Eight hours is ideal. That is what I do.
Though it is an enigma why humans need sleep, it occurs to me that it came to us through the ages over the evolution process, when we could not see anything in the dark and were afraid of possible predators. So for having nothing better to do, like watching TV or reading a paperback, we slept through till daybreak. The time during sleep is utilized by the body to repair damages internally in the body putting all voluntary actions at minimal levels of rest to conserve breathing rate, keep heart rhythm and mind waves at even pace etc. The dreams we dream take us to a level of meditation that furthers our auto repair of body. There are theories of rapid eye moment and other stages in sleep, yet nobody seems to have come out with any specific irrefutable conclusions on sleep. The experimental psychology goes on till day.
Again, even when we sleep normally, despite taking a siesta, there is always a need to sleep the night off. Sleep backlog occurs if we miss the normal winks for a few nights and we have to sleep off the backlog over the next week. If we sleep for lesser hours there is chance of causing ourselves to go into momentary black outs for a few seconds without our knowledge with eyes open, leaving us to the risk of causing possible life threatening accidents to others as well as ourselves, like when driving or doing such delicate tasks that need concentration and balance.

About 8 but I wish I had more-10or11.As for the ideal imount of time, it differs-I feel good if I sleep at least 9 hours , but Napoleon and Edison are told to have slept 3 hours.

7 is the recommended for adults but this varies quite a bit, some people quite happily on 3-4 others are in tatters if they don't get 9. The older you get the less you generally need and some people do better with less hours during the night but with several naps during the day. I like as many as I can get but usually depends on what's happening.

I have between 5 and 7 hours a night, but I heard your supposed to have at least 8.
