After all, he died doing what he loved most, fighting to educate others about wildlife as well as fighting to protect wildlife. Would you say he was a martyr?

He was a great scientist, one of the few who could get others to be excited about nature and zoology, he was a great communicator, he was certainly heroic.

I do not think I would call him a martyr. That term just seems inappropriate. He did not die for a cause, he lived for it.

I don't think Steve's death and life's pursuit has anything to do with martyrdom. He was blessed with the ability to follow his dreams and although his untimely death is painful to so many, he passed away doing what he loved so dearly.

martyrdom requires concious sacrifice of one's life...i dont think dude intended on biting the big one
