Well, I let my kids watch all the tv they want. I know they say that any amount of TV is bad, and that kids under 5 shouldn't be exposed to more than 30 minutes of TV a day.. but ya know what?? I don't care. They love certain shows, and totally blocking out the TV is damned near impossible. They get to watch a little TV after breakfast while I'm doing the dishes, and after lunch.. etc.. and they're perfectly fine.
They're still very active, they're still very smart, and they still like to do other things besides watch TV.. as long as you still take him outside, and are still spending time with him ( playing, reading, etc) then personally, I don't see a problem with TV AT ALL!!

If you have stuff that you got to do then what's wrong with that? Just as long as he is watching something that is educational. My son loves TV and learns a lot from TV that he will not sit down and take the time to learn from me but at the same time TV would come in second to doing other things such as going outside.

Several recent studies indicate while certain limited advantages are present in early childhood viewing, the long term negatives to imagination, socialization, obesity, etc., more then overwhelm it.
Too many use it-often as a necessity- as day care. Anything over an hour a day has negative impacts. Keeping in mind how difficult and time consuming it is to interact with the child for hours... for the child's benefit it very positive not to have too much TV at any age, especially under 2.

I used thosed Baby Einstein videos a lot at that age, but those are only 25 minutes long. i would turn that on and I would be able to get dinner ready while he watched, but that was it. I wouldn't let your 5 month old watch TV all day because then they just want more. Sometimes TV is too exciting, you don't want your kid to be bored with real life. A butterfly flying across your yard would pale in comparision to 15 hours of Elmo dancing in your kid's face! :-)

Honestly, I think babies that young shouldn't be watching TV. There's no need for it. And before anyone gets their feathers ruffled about how the TV can babysit while mom gets her stuff done, I managed as a single mom when my kids were babies, and they didn't watch television. Their dad was deployed a lot and I spent a lot of time caring for them on my own, plus working full-time.
Buy a sling, wear your baby on you and you can still get your work done. There's no need to put him in front of a screen at so young an age.

I think TV can be educational for very young children. Just make sure you choose the right shows and do not just turn on the TV and walk away until you are sure what is being shown.

Why would you want to introduce garbage to your child at this young age? Don't you have a swing for him? Or how about a playpen? Or put him in his crib with a "baby gym"...why start him out being a couch potato?

I think you are lucky you can find time to do anything with a five month old. As long as it is in moderation, it is not bad. Put Barney on. It is pretty educational. My daughter new her abc's at one because of Barney!

Maisey all the way. When our daughter was young, we watched Maisey--the life and times of a loveable mouse. Not sure where you'd find these videos today, though--maybe Amazon.

did you watch tv? are you okay? so are the rest of us. set a schedule (when you are showering, cooking dinner, ect.) to buckle him in a safety seat and let him enjoy the colors and music of children's educational tv. then turn it off and spend time with him. he is only this little once.
