I have a 94 accord ex with 149,000 miles on it, and a 96 accord dx with 179,000.
The 94 has leather, 6 disk cd changer, and power everything, as well as a VTEC motor. The 96 is more basic, with cloth seats, roll-up windows, and an aftermarket sunroof. It also has a six disc CD changer.
the 94:
Has siezed brake components and 0% left on the front pads. It has a bad front motor mounts. The boot where the axel connects to the tranny is torn, so the car will leak a little tranny fluid because of this. The leather is worn, and the interior overall is fairly dirty. The windshield needs replaced. The A/C doesn't work.
The 96

Needs the timing belt changed, and a upper control arm. The headliner is torn and sagging in the rear.

The 96 is getting inspected today and I should have a better Idea of its condition afterwards. The 96 seems to be "tighter", in that it runs and drives a little smoother, and it's A/C works. Provided nothing else is found wrong w/ the 96, which car do I keep?

I already have a 2004 accord. This is for my girlfriend, she can't afford a newer car. Likewise, I must sell one of them because I bought the 96 to either resell ( I got it ridiculously cheap) or to serve as a replacement for her 94. It's just a matter of choosing btwn the two.

Once Again, A new car is NOT AN OPTION.

Thanks anyhow for your answers, but I mearly want input btwn the two cars. The question is: Which car do I keep, the 94 or the 96?

Ok, the issues on either car will be fixed completely. Again, this car is for my girlfriend, not me. Both are automatics. She is not looking to get a totally new car now, or for the next 4 years (finishing college)

I would keep the 94. Change the pads and rotors that will cost about 60 buck if you do it yourself. The mounts are cheap buy them over the net and take it to a local shop they will do for about 80 bucks and while your there have them fix the boot so the leaking stops overall the 94 will cost less to fix.

The 96 has fewer issues. Don't spend money on the timing belt, just shift it at 3-4K and keep clean oil in her. Staple the headliner up and buy used tires when the control arm wears them out. Hope like heck that by this time next year you have enough money to buy a new car!

The 94 is a better model and is OBD1, while the 96 has higher mileage, unknown history and is OBD2. The stricter emissions make the 96 less able to be modified.

My thoughts on old cars that need that much work. Sorry neglect has happened and both cars can become maintence hogs. Wash both sell both and go out and get a new Acura TSX when you drive in front of store windows and think "I look great in this car" And besides reliable transportation gets you to work every day. So you can pay for it! Buy newer and better not older and worn down.
