A writer or a journalist some times uses a word that stick, in this Case there may be one more reason.

India is in Asia, but it was separated by mountain and desert, in the north and east to some extent. It was mainly isolated from Asia, in the olden days very few travellers made it to India from other countries. So some one coined the word subcontinent.

If you imagine an ocean on its northern boarder, it would have been continent.

Hence Subcontinent.
