Yes, it's a military term, short for a kilometer, for ease of use as it's only one syallable. The exact origin is unknown, but it entered common usage amongst American soldiers in Vietnam during the 1960s.

(and if it didn't have a definite length it would be a bit difficult for other people to know what you were talking about when you used the term, wouldn't it?)

Field radios are notoriously bad for tranmitting so transmissions are kept short & sweet.

In the UK we abbreviate Kilometer to KM. In USA they abbreviate it to k, hence the term klick, meaning kilometer.
