My friend is a brilliant songwriter and has a natural talent but has only written on paper for fun. I joked with her that she should try and make some money from it but how would she go about getting a record company to buy her work? (if that's what they do). Helpful advice only thanks.

Try recording a few songs. You should be able to get hold of a few computer programs to help you do this, shop around.
She could also try joining an existing band/group as a song writer.
Once you have recorded material it can be sent off to record companies, radio stations and night clubs to get some real airtime.
If they group can perform then live gigs would be a good way to go as well.
