I can't go shopping with him, he's living in the UK. Currently studying in Uni. He was assigned a project based on looks and clothing, so he was just trying to find out what suits him best, he wants a ladies opinion..

Lots. Tall and slim is the easiest body type to find clothing for. This is the body type designers use to fit their clothing; just look at male models.
Get tailored looks that fit well, a common mistake is wearing stuff too big. It doesn't add size, it just emphasizes how slender he is. A streamlined look can flatter shoulders and his chest better.
His jeans and pants should sit lower on the waist. The shirt should be contrasting color to break up the body, and be worn tucked in, and a good belt. It can distract from leg length bringing the eye upward.
Double breasted blazers can add bulk to his torso, giving him a wider look around his shoulders and chest. Make sure the waist is nipped and tucked properly so that it doesn't look boxy.
Another great jacket is the non-vented one. The tailoring to a slender waist and hip can really add some width around the shoulder and chest, giving him a "V" upper body. He could even add small shoulder pads if he wanted. Stick to wider lapels to draw the eye out.
Also try jackets with more buttons. Those long fashion coats with 5, 6, 7 or more buttons were made for the tall man.
Fabrics could be used to add some size too. Look for heavy ones like wools and tweeds.
Avoid vertical stripes and pinstripes. Horizonatal lines work best, and try some warmer colors. Dark colors tend to be slimming.
Shoes should have a heavy or bulky sole. Delicate shoes can make him look more slender.
Vest and V-neck sweaters can add bulk, but don't go oversized in the sweaters.

Whatever he gets, tell him to try it on first in the store. The clothing should fit well, look tailored to his body, and have some different colors and/or textures to break up his body. Even a simple waistline or a colorful tie under a suit works. Going too large or too small in sizing can only make him look taller/slimmer. If he needs, have him get measured at the store by the sales clerk. The clerk can point him in the right direction for clothing, and help him choose styles and colors.

I think the best suit for him would be a navy blue, single breasted, three-button jacket, with pleated trousers, no cuffs on the trousers. Tropical weight 100% wool would be my fabric of choice. The price range: anything you want to spend.
Any light color shirt will look good. There are neck ties on sale by the millions.
