How do they determine tv ratings ??

i know its based on how many people watch the shows but how do they find out who watched what?

AFAIK a certain amount of homes in different locations have box fitted which records which tv shows they watch and transmit the info.

Nielson has little boxes they install in hundreds of thousands of homes. That's how they can tell tv ratings.
