Average with Google and other major search engines is about six months. As a lot of smaller ones feed off Google and Yahoo, it can take several more months after that for it the site to be removed from them. (I have a couple sites that have been gone for over two years that are still listed at places.)

If the site is gone, then why worry. If someone tries it they will just get an error and then they move on the next site on the Google list. Or you can put a redirect on the page that takes them to whatever new site you have instead.
