e.g does it have built in memory or do you lose saved data as you did with the original Game Boy?

It really depends on the game. If the game cartridge automatically saves game data, such as Mario Tennis: Power Tour (with the exception if you're currently in a match). In other games you'll have to manually save or find places to save in the game (Metroid: Zero Mission)

Your system settings, such as time and display, save automatically. For game saves, as Shino said, it depends on the game. Some, such as Mario Kart DS save your game automatically. Others, like Animal Crossing: Wild World require you to manually save. Read your game manual!
