I have both male and female in a 10 gallon tank, shallow water, plants, the whole deal. but she shows no interest what so ever in my male. I have fed her quite well, shes in good shape, but isnt receptive. i've looked all over the internet for answers, but have found none. this pretty much is my last resort, can anyone help me? and please, real answers only. thanks a lot!

The temp must be right, they are tropical fish and need a temp of around 78-80 degrees. BTW, there are no similarities between goldfish and bettas (pronounced bet-tah, not bay-tah), other than they are both egglayers. Goldfish are cold water fish and come from JAPAN (not China), bettas are tropical and come from Southeast Asia, specifically Thailand (not China) which used to be known as Siam (hence the name Siamese Fighting Fish).

Bettas --- Don't leave the female in the tank with the male. He will kill or damage her eventually. The only time a male tolerates a female is when she has been thoroughly conditioned and has eggs for him to fertilize.

You must keep her away from him and feed her high protein food for about 2-3 weeks so she will produce eggs. You then float her in a jar in his tank so he can see her. He will build a nest. When he has the nest completed, slowly release her so as not to damage the nest.

Now you need to watch them very closely for the next hour or so to see if they are compatible. Sometimes, no matter what you do, the male just doesn't get it. If that is the case, get another male. If it works out between them, he will fertilize the eggs and place them in the nest. When she has no more to give him, you must remove her or he will kill her.

The males tend the nest and the young until they are free swimming. After that, he may eat them, so remove him and start feeding the fry very fine food.

Her environment is all clear. Thing is that females never show interest in any males, only when males start chasing females. MayB u got only these 2 fish, so they R not active, there's no other fish 2 comPte with so the male will just get 2 rest. Fish tend 2 swim around faster & get more active when they have companies. But u couldn't put more than 2 males in the same tank 'coz they'll fight 2 death. Instead of puting a bunch of males in, u can try 2 put some females in.
Warning: Betta's breeding is like "following the leader" & If 1 female starts, others will follow. Considering betta is not that kinda tropical fish like guPs. Betta may have some similarities as a goldfish. Goldfish & Betta R both oringinated from China. So ur betta may need a nest, clear water & a fine Spring day 2 breed. Their breeding is longer than guPs & other tropical fish.
U can also check out at a pet store & ask 4 help. Or Go 2 the library & find a book on fish.

The female is ready to explode with eggs? I've not found that fertile females are that much larger. This sounds like shes bloated, or has dropsy. That said some pairs just won't mate. From my observations mating is closely tyed to aggression. You need just the right amount of aggression. Too much and they kill each other. Too little and they can actually coexist, but won't ever mate. (This why breeders have never been able to breed aggression completely out of bettas.)

Did you put them in the same tank a long time ago, before this? If so, he might have lost interest in her. U r supposed to hide the female, then put her in the tanknear the male(the female must be kept in a glass box..etc)The male is suppposed to flare his fins and act crazy..the female is gonna be a bit scared. leave them like that for about a day or so..(go to bettatalk.com for more details)
then let the female go free. if she's interested, they will mate..if not then no babies. (if no luck seperate them..they will fight)
if luck is with you go to bettatalk.com for more details. That site is great!
(oh yeah the male will begin to make a bubble nest if the female likes it theywill hook up. lol)

My experience with female bettas paired up and trying to get them to reproduce is that they need to be the only fish in the tank...or at least that was my theory. I always had other fish in there with them and I think they were "bothered" or the other fish ate the eggs. In any event, no luck.

If the male is not making a bubble nest on the surface of the water then she can't lay the eggs.

Or if you unknowingly keep cleaning it off...
