In my book it's Irwin, he can play right back too, his consistancy was outstanding, cost little or nothing, was'nt like some players today moaning about wages or his image, just got on with the job. If you don't agree who is in your book.

He was a great defender but i would have to say that in the modern game you have to offer more attacking wise than Irwin did. I would say Ashley Cole is the best Left back in the Premiership at the moment and maybe the World. I think by the time he finishs his career he will be known as the best Left back ever to play in English Football. I would agree with you on the other parts you have said though the modern day players are more concerned about their Hair or what car they drive and don't really show any loyalty to the team that they are playing for unlike Irwin who was United through and through and always just got on with it, which you have got to give him a lot of respect for, he was definitely a great bloke, but this for me don't necessarily make you the greatest player.

Very consistent player and also seemed to be a gentleman. However the classiest left back was Ray Wilson (I met Tony Brown of West Bromwich Albion some time ago and he rated Wilson as the best full back he had ever played against). My own personal favourite is the one and only Stuart Pearce

Duncan Edwards.
But he died in the Munich Air Disaster before his prime.
Even Bobby Charlton once said he wasn't even fit to lace boots for Duncan Edwards, and that he was the only player who made him feel inferior.
