Do u always need a witness to win the case against another person for slander?

In any legal proceedings, it would of course be beneficial for the plaintiff to have as much supporting evidence as possible to convice the judge or jury. This is not always possible though. For example, a girl claiming that she was raped might not have any witnesses and any physical evidence could have already been destroyed due to the passage of time. Historically, convictions have been made based on circumstantial evidence and/or confessions by the accused.

In the case of your question, I assume you are referring to a case in the civil courts rather than criminal. In a case like this, you need to prove that you have suffered some form of damage from the alleged slanderous statement(s) for the case to even be considered as any damage awarded to you needs to be quantified in terms of the damage suffered by you.

If there are no witnesses when the slanderous statement was made, the defence can argue that:

a) it is your word against the defendant's or

b) since no one knows about the alleged slander other than yourself, what damages have you suffered?

In short, witness(es) in any court case is always preferable and in practice, may even be critical to the success of the case. But you may proceed without any and win if there is other evidence in your favour. However, always cousult your legal counsel before undertaking any suits.

Of course you need witnesses to back up your claim. Otherwise, it would just be your word against his, and you would be wasting time and money for nothing.
